With the correct information and guidance, you can join the green hydrogen revolution and significantly impact the transition to a more sustainable future. Let's dive in and unlock the potential of green hydrogen together.

What is meant by Green Hydrogen?

Green Hydrogen refers to the hydrogen gas produced through electrolysis, a process that uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike traditional hydrogen production methods that rely on fossil fuels, green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power. It means that the entire production process is made emission-free, making it truly sustainable and an environmentally friendly solution.

Types of Green Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the most abundant element and is typically extracted from hydrogen-based compounds. There are three categories of hydrogen based on the type of extraction method used: Grey, Blue and Green. Let us have a look at each of these categories-

  • Grey Hydrogen- It is produced via coal or Lignite gasification (black or brown) or through a process called steam methane reformation (SMR) of natural gas. Most importantly, these tend to be mostly carbon-intensive processes.
  • Blue Hydrogen- It is produced via natural gas or the process of goal gasification combined with Carbon capture storage (CCS) or carbon capture use  (CCU) Technologies to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Green Hydrogen- It is produced using the electrolysis of water with electricity generated by renewable energy. Moreover, the carbon intensity somewhat depends on the carbon neutrality of the source of electricity (i.e, the more renewable energy there is in the electricity, the better the fuel mix, and the “greener” the hydrogen produced)

The Rise of Green Hydrogen: Empowering a Renewable Energy Revolution

As discussed in the committee, India is entirely committed to achieving climatic goals, with it being the most significant contributor to the World's rapidly growing renewable energy capacity. As an icing on the cake, India is all set to become a magnetic hub, attracting investments in renewable energy. Moreover, India has committed to becoming energy-independent by 2047 and achieving Net Zero by 2070. India is all set to emerge as the treasure trove for the Green Hydrogen in the World.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission is a roadmap to establishing a Green Hydrogen ecosystem, while it acts as a catalyst for challenges or opportunities that come its way.

Benefits of Green Hydrogen

The entrance of Green hydrogen is sure to make India a leading producer and supplier in the world, which has served to be one of the most crucial aspects of a mission. Likewise, it would continue to empower the economy, with its undeniable benefits. To know more, let us have a closer look at them-

  • To Achieve Carbon Neutrality

The reason why Green hydrogen gets all the attention is because of its carbon neutrality. Unlike traditional hydrogen production methods, which solely rely on fossil fuels and release harmful greenhouse gases, green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power. This implies that the production process is emission-free, making green hydrogen a crucial tool in combating climate change.

  • Opportunities for Employment and Economic Development

The massive adoption of green hydrogen acts as a catalyst for job creation and employment. It is noteworthy that as the demand for hydrogen overtakes, so does the opportunities for economic growth. From constructing and maintaining renewable energy infrastructure to manufacturing and distributing hydrogen technologies, green hydrogen carries the potential for job creation worldwide. All in all, not only does it benefit the economy, but it endorses the transition to a sustainable future.

  • Energy Storage

Green Hydrogen is considered to be an efficient solution for energy storage. Not only can it be stored or transported easily, but it contributes to making it an ideal option for long-term energy storage. As a result, it can be converted back into electricity when needed, providing a stable and continuous power supply.

  • Energy Dependence

With the advent of green hydrogen, countries can easily reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, by achieving energy independence. As a result, traditional energy sources lead to matters of price volatility and geopolitical uncertainty, which are sure to have adverse effects on economies. Therefore, Green Hydrogen, on the other hand, can be produced with renewable resources, providing a secure and stable energy supply.

Therefore, the benefits of green hydrogen contribute to achieving carbon neutrality, offering employment opportunities, and energy storage as well as ensuring energy dependence.

Decoding the Catalysts that Paved the Way for the Green Hydrogen Mission

The Green Hydrogen effort was initiated to make India a global hub for producing, using, and exporting Green Hydrogen and its derivatives as per the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. The rationale behind this effort is to encourage India to become Self-reliant (Atamanirbhar) by introducing clean energy amidst the clean energy transition. The mission aims to reduce India's dependence on fossil fuel imports while promoting better technology and leadership to encourage the decarbonization of the economy.

Mission Objectives

As we make huge strides in India's economy each day, we open our eyes to exceptional initiatives, with the Green Hydrogen mission being one of them. This Mission concentrates on making India a Global hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The driving force behind this Mission is to help India become Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) by adopting Clean energy.

As a changemaker, India stands tall and strives for ambitious goals, promising to fulfil doable actions, such as decarbonizing the economy and eliminating dependence on fossil imports, while ensuring market leadership in the field of Green Hydrogen.

As per various reports, if you wish to achieve such objectives, the Mission has anticipated building the capabilities to produce around 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) mainly of green hydrogen per annum by 2030, having the potential to reach around 10MMT per annum with the growth of export markets. The Green Hydrogen Mission's main aim is to support replacing fossil fuels with renewable fuels.

The Mission aims to make India a global leader in the Technology and manufacturing of electrolyzers and other enabling technologies for Green Hydrogen.

Why Green Hydrogen is Vital?

Green hydrogen is a clean energy source, which makes it a sustainable energy carrier and contributes to reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Seeing its multiple advantages, the role of green hydrogen has been exemplified, contributing to the Green Hydrogen Mission. As a result of this, the need for green hydrogen is displayed below-

  • Infrastructure Development

The National Green Hydrogen Mission employs the usage of Green Hydrogen as a clean energy source, interconnected with the supply chains that can transport hydrogen seamlessly with the assistance of pipelines, storage facilities or tankers while involving other networks for domestic consumption or exports.

  • Regulations and Standards

The Green Hydrogen Mission encircles the initiated efforts and sets standards to undertake the anticipated growth of this sector and to comply with international goals that come with it. In short, it has a well-defined framework, establishing the requirements around the upcoming technologies.

  • Skill Development

With the introduction of the Green Hydrogen Mission comes other features, with skill development being one of them. A skill development program will likely cover requirements in various segments, initiated in close coordination with the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.

This is not it; there are several other reasons why the Green Hydrogen Mission acquires importance in times ahead of us.

Compliance Requirements for Green Hydrogen Production Plant

The compliances involved in establishing Green Hydrogen Production Plant consist of the following, which are-

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, green hydrogen holds immense potential in a journey towards a sustainable future. Its ability to decarbonize the energy sector, enable energy storage, and transform transportation makes it a game-changer in the fight against Climate Change. By embracing the power of green hydrogen, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world for future generations. As conscious citizens, efforts have been made to set up the green hydrogen production plant to support the Green Hydrogen Mission at large. Let’s join hands and pave for a future powered by green hydrogen.
