The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, has announced a national-level start-up challenge to promote innovations in Rooftop Solar (RTS) and Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) technologies. The initiative was launched on June 23, 2025, at the National Conference on Skill Development for the Renewable Energy Workforce, held at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan in New Delhi. This challenge is supported by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and coordinated in partnership with Startup India and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Prize Pool to Encourage Clean Energy Solutions

The challenge offers a total prize pool of Rs. 2.3 crore (US$ 265,130) to support breakthrough technologies in green energy. The first prize is Rs. 1 crore, the second prize is Rs. 50 lakh, and the third prize is Rs. 30 lakh. Additionally, ten consolation prizes of Rs. 5 lakh each will be awarded. Winning start-ups will also receive incubation support, pilot opportunities, and expert mentorship through MNRE and NISE. Applications are open until August 20, 2025, and the winners will be announced on September 10, 2025.

National Innovation Drive Targets Affordable and Sustainable Energy Solutions

The challenge targets innovations in four key focus areas. These include affordability through modular systems and circular economy financing, resilience by improving grid stability and cybersecurity, inclusivity via community solar models and virtual net metering for underserved populations, and environmental sustainability through hybrid energy models and recycling systems. The goal is to drive scalable and sustainable solutions in India’s renewable energy sector.

Start-Ups from Multiple Sectors Encouraged to Apply

Start-ups working in sectors such as green technology, IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, fintech, energy hardware, construction, and waste management are eligible to apply. This innovation drive aims to enhance India’s clean energy future while generating green jobs and empowering local communities. By encouraging cutting-edge technology and scalable models, the MNRE seeks to fast-track the adoption of clean energy across urban and rural areas.
