In July 2025, the India-Australia Green Hydrogen Taskforce released its recommendation report. This report sets a clear plan for both nations to work together and grow the green hydrogen industry.

The Taskforce was formed after an agreement between PM Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Experts from science, business, and finance joined the group to share ideas and help both countries move faster toward a green energy future.

The report aims to make cooperation simple, measurable, and real. It focuses on using Australia's innovation and India's strong manufacturing power to produce more clean hydrogen and reduce pollution worldwide.

Policy Background

Australia started its National Hydrogen Strategy in 2019 and updated it in 2024. India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in January 2023. Both plans aim to replace fossil fuels with cleaner energy. The new Taskforce report connects these plans, showing how both nations can share skills, create new jobs, and speed up green hydrogen development.

Five Key Focus Areas

The India-Australia Green Hydrogen Taskforce report 2025 outlines five key areas for action over the next five years to strengthen clean energy cooperation. It focuses on hydrogen technology co-development and manufacture, encouraging joint work to make advanced electrolysers and improve hydrogen storage systems that are cheaper and more efficient.

In green minerals and metals, both nations plan to develop green iron, steel, alumina, and aluminium using clean hydrogen through joint pilot projects and research programs. The green fuels and supply chains section supports producing green methanol and green ammonia to replace fossil fuels in ships and industries, along with setting up new supply chains and safe port facilities.

For skills and workforce development, the report proposes training programs to build a strong hydrogen workforce, supported by the Australian MATES visa scheme, that will help Indian graduates and professionals gain experience in renewable energy fields. Lastly, under knowledge sharing, India and Australia will exchange research, industrial developments, and policy insights to create common safety and quality standards for the hydrogen sector.

Focus on Green Technology and Innovation

The report highlights that hydrogen can power many industries such as transport, steel, and chemicals. Working together can help India and Australia make green hydrogen much cheaper. This can help it grow fast and replace dirty fossil fuels. Australia brings smart new ideas and strong research skills. India brings big factories that can make things quickly and at low cost. When both strengths come together, green hydrogen can become affordable and easy for the world to use.

The India-Australia Green Hydrogen Taskforce report 2025 marks a new chapter in clean energy cooperation. It connects two fast-growing economies to create new technologies, clean fuels, and green jobs. By combining ideas, skills, and innovation, India and Australia aim to lead the world in green hydrogen production and help fight climate change.
