A flat panel LCD TV that employs light emitting diodes (LEDs) for its backlighting instead of cold cathode fluorescent lamps (see CCFL). LED TVs provide deeper blacks and more intense colour than fluorescent TVs because they are smaller, more energy efficient, and have a wider optical range. Sony introduced the first LED television in 2005.
