In a strategic move to boost India’s position in the global spice market, especially in turmeric, the Indian government is actively implementing the SPICED scheme, Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development. Spearheaded by the Spices Board, the initiative focuses on main areas such as food safety, improved post-harvest quality, value addition, and business development.

The scheme aims to strengthen turmeric exports by maintaining international quality standards. This quality is achieved through assessments at quality laboratories and initiatives like Buyer-Seller Meets, which directly link Indian farmers and exporters with global buyers.

New Board to Strengthen Turmeric Exports

On October 4, 2023, the government established the National Turmeric Board, further strengthening its commitment to this golden spice. The Board is assigned with multiple roles, including:

  • Encouraging product innovation and value addition
  • Expanding global awareness and consumption of turmeric
  • Enhancing export infrastructure and supply chain sustainability
  • Supporting traditional knowledge, medicinal research, and grower training

India remains a global leader in turmeric exports, commanding between 58% to 66% of the world market from 2020 to 2024. In fact, 2024 marked a record high, with turmeric export value touching US$ 333.25 million.

Global Reach and Future Outlook

The top destinations for Indian turmeric from 2020 are Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, USA, Malaysia and Morocco. With the growing global demand for turmeric-based wellness and food products, India’s initiatives under SPICED and the National Turmeric Board are poised to further increase its market share.

Through this strategic push, India is not only encouraging its agricultural heritage but also empowering farmers, enhancing quality standards, economically viable, and economically sustainable Constructing the system.
