The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has announced significant amendments to the Warehouse (Development and Regulation) Warehouse Registration Rules, 2017. On May 8, 2025, the government issued a notification to simplify and accelerate the process of warehouse registration in India. These rules may be called the Warehouse (Development and Regulation) Registration of Warehouses (Amendment) Rules, 2025. These changes intends to make it easier for businesses involved in setting up warehousing businesses in India to operate more efficiently.

Revised Rules for Warehouse Registration

The amendment makes specific changes to Rules 11 and 12 of the Warehouse Registration Rules. Rule 11 reduces the processing time for warehouse registration to seven working days instead of the previous 15 days. Similarly, Rule 12, which deals with the reverification and renewal of warehouse registrations, now requires a processing period of seven days instead of the previous 21 days.

These changes reflect the government’s focus on streamlining warehouse operations, which is critical for warehousing and logistics-related businesses. Reducing the waiting time for registration and renewal will reduce bureaucratic delays and improve the overall efficiency of warehousing operations across the country and this will significantly help those looking to expand or a warehousing business setup in India.

Impact on Business and Economy

The amendments are expected to have a positive impact on the warehousing and logistics sector, which plays a vital role in the supply chain. Faster registration processes will encourage more businesses to set up warehouses, leading to more investment in the sector. It will also increase the overall efficiency of the supply chain, benefiting both businesses and consumers. Moreover, the ease of doing business in India has been a key focus for the government and these changes are a step in the right direction. By reducing the time it takes to register or renew a warehouse, the government is improving the regulatory framework for warehousing and helping businesses establish operations more quickly.

This move by the government to streamline the warehouse registration process in India will benefit businesses and the economy. With faster registration times, setting up a warehouse has become much easier. This shift will not only boost the efficiency of the warehousing sector but also boost the growth of the logistics and supply chain industries in India.
