Introduction

NTPC Limited, a central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has set a major goal of building 30 GW nuclear power capacity by the year 2047. This plan supports the Government of India’s vision to reach 100 GW of nuclear power by the same year. Nuclear energy plays a key role in providing clean, steady, and reliable electricity for the country’s future needs.

To move faster, NTPC has started work through joint ventures, new companies, and global partnerships. These steps aim to strengthen India’s energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

ASHVINI JV Leads the Rajasthan Nuclear Project

NTPC has joined hands with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to form Anu Shakti Vidyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI). This joint venture is building a major nuclear plant called the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP).

The project will be located in the Banswara district of Rajasthan. It will have four 700-MW nuclear units, for a total capacity of 2,800 MW. Current plans show that testing of the first unit may begin in FY 2032–33. This project will help meet rising power demand in western India.

NTPC Forms New Nuclear Subsidiary NPUNL

NTPC has also created a wholly owned nuclear subsidiary, named NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Limited (NPUNL). The company was incorporated on 7 January 2025 after receiving all required approvals.

NPUNL will focus fully on nuclear power development. This step allows NTPC to plan, build, and manage nuclear projects more efficiently. The new company will also support long-term nuclear expansion across the country.

Global Partnerships and Clean Energy Vision

To explore advanced technology and global experience, NTPC has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI). This move invites international partners to work together on nuclear power development. Such partnerships can bring safer designs, better efficiency, and faster execution.

With projects like MBRAPP, new entities like NPUNL, and global cooperation, NTPC continues to support India’s clean energy journey. Nuclear power will remain a strong pillar in meeting future electricity needs while protecting the environment.
