The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is spearheading multiple initiatives to enhance the country’s food processing infrastructure and create significant off-farm employment opportunities. Through its flagship schemes - Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME), and the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) - the Ministry is driving sectoral growth and strengthening India’s position in global food markets.

PMKSY: Strengthening Food Processing Infrastructure
The PMKSY provides financial assistance for setting up and expanding food processing units. With a total outlay of ₹5,520 crore for 2021-2026, the scheme is designed to modernize infrastructure and boost value addition in the sector. For FY 2025-26, the budget allocation stood at ₹903.38 crore, with ₹131.24 crore utilized as of July 24, 2025.
PMFME: Empowering Micro Enterprises
The PMFME scheme, operational from 2020-2026 with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore, offers financial, technical, and business support for establishing or upgrading micro food processing enterprises. This centrally sponsored scheme plays a crucial role in rural entrepreneurship and local employment generation. In FY 2025-26, the budget allocation was ₹2,000 crore, with ₹265.77 crore spent till July 2025.
PLISFPI: Creating Global Food Champions
The PLISFPI scheme, launched to support global food manufacturing champions and promote Indian food brands internationally, has a budgetary outlay of ₹10,900 crore for 2021-2027. For FY 2025-26, ₹1,200 crore was allocated, with an expenditure of ₹207.07 crore so far.
Employment and Economic Impact
These schemes collectively aim to enhance India’s food processing capabilities, reduce agricultural wastage, and open new employment avenues beyond traditional farming. By incentivizing infrastructure development and promoting export-oriented production, MoFPI is not only strengthening the domestic food industry but also improving India’s competitiveness in the global market.
With strategic investments and steady progress in utilization of allocated funds, the Ministry is on track to transform the food processing sector into a major contributor to India’s economic growth and employment generation.
