Italy has been appointed as the new Chair of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) BioFuture Platform Initiative, a key global forum for promoting sustainable biofuels and bio-based solutions. The country will hold the chairmanship from 2025 to 2027, a role previously held by the United States and Brazil. The announcement was made during a recent meeting in Marrakech, where Italy's Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin, expressed his commitment to advancing sustainable bioenergy solutions.

CEM BioFuture Platform: A Global Initiative for Sustainable Biofuels
Established in 2016 during the COP22 summit in Marrakech, the CEM BioFuture Platform plays a crucial role in fostering global collaboration on biofuels and sustainable biomass solutions. It aims to promote policy discussions, exchange of best practices, and sharing of technological advancements. The initiative also focuses on finding financial solutions to scale biofuels and ensuring a sustainable energy future. As the new Chair, Italy plans to strengthen these efforts and further develop biofuels as an integral part of global energy transition strategies.
Italy’s Vision for Sustainable Biofuels and Green Transition
Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin emphasized Italy’s commitment to promoting sustainable biofuels, especially in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as transportation. He highlighted the importance of a non-ideological approach to energy transition, focusing on practical and sustainable solutions. Italy’s leadership will aim to enhance international collaboration, particularly within platforms like the CEM, COP, and G20, to drive biofuel development and expand sustainable biomass supply chains. Italy will also seek to stimulate private sector investments to meet Net Zero and Net Negative goals for the future.
Leadership of Politecnico di Torino in BioFuture Platform
The chairmanship of the BioFuture Platform will be led by Professor David Chiaramonti from Politecnico di Torino. He expressed gratitude to the former leaders, the United States and Brazil, for their guidance and said that Italy aims to build on their achievements. Italy’s leadership will work in close cooperation with Brazil and the Netherlands, the appointed Vice-Chairs, to further boost the industrial deployment of sustainable biomass. Politecnico di Torino, under the leadership of Rector Stefano Corgnati, is committed to supporting the green transition and facilitating policies that ensure an environmentally sustainable and economically viable energy future.
The Role of Sustainable Bioenergy in Global Energy Transition
The International Energy Agency (IEA), which facilitates the BioFuture Platform, reports that modern sustainable bioenergy now accounts for over half of the total renewable energy supply. However, to meet global climate and energy targets, growth in this sector needs to accelerate. Dr. Paolo Frankl from the IEA stressed the need for stronger international collaboration to unlock the full potential of sustainable bioenergy. This includes supporting innovation, attracting investment, and creating policies that promote its widespread use. The IEA will continue to play a key role in supporting the BioFuture Platform under Italy’s leadership.
With Italy's appointment as Chair, the CEM BioFuture Platform is set to enter a new phase of action, focusing on accelerating the growth of sustainable biofuels and making significant progress in achieving global climate and energy goals.
