The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a nationwide enforcement drive focused on spices. The campaign will run across the country from October 1 to October 31, 2025.

This comes after a major surveillance program carried out between November 2024 and February 2025. That survey covered 13 popular spices and revealed several issues. Authorities noted problems with quality, contamination, microbial levels, and even labeling in many samples.

What the Drive Will Cover

The upcoming enforcement will focus on 13 specific spices, both in whole and powdered forms. These include black pepper, cardamom, chilli, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, and turmeric.

The checks will ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. A special focus will be placed on proper labeling and product safety.

Checks at the Manufacturing Source

The FSSAI has made it clear that inspections will only be carried out at manufacturing units. This will help catch problems at the root before products reach the market.

All collected samples will be tested in NABL-accredited laboratories that are authorized to check all required parameters. This ensures that the results are reliable and meet national food safety standards.

Authorities have also been instructed to upload details of inspections, samples, and outcomes on the FoSCoS or FoSCoRIS portals. A consolidated report of all findings must be sent to FSSAI by November 20, 2025.

This nationwide spice enforcement drive reflects FSSAI’s commitment to strengthening food safety in India. By focusing on manufacturing units, the campaign aims to ensure consumers receive safe, clean, and properly labelled spices. The move will also push producers to maintain strict compliance with regulations.
