On August 01, 2025 in a major move to improve public health and food safety, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified a new order requiring all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to prominently display their FSSAI License/Registration certificate along with a QR code linked to the Food Safety Connect app.

QR Code Display Made Compulsory for All Food Outlets
FBOs including restaurants, cafes, dhabas, and eateries must now keep their FSSAI registration/license certificates with integrated QR codes in places that are clearly visible to consumers like entryways, billing counters, or dining areas. This QR code links directly to the Food Safety Connect app, a mobile platform that enables consumers to instantly report food safety and hygiene concerns.
Consumer Empowerment and Transparency
The primary aim of this initiative is to promote transparency and empower consumers by streamlining the complaint filing process. By scanning the QR code, users can access up to the following features:
- Lodging complaints about food quality and hygiene
- Reporting misleading food claims
- Viewing information on licensed and registered FBOs
- Receiving food safety alerts and updates from FSSAI
Integration across Digital Platforms
In addition to physical displays on food premises, FBOs are also instructed to integrate the QR code or download link to the Food Safety Connect app on all relevant digital platforms. This includes their official websites and online food delivery platforms, where applicable.
Compliance with FSS Regulations
This requirement is in accordance with Condition of License No. 1 under the FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011. The directive applies nationwide and is part of FSSAI’s broader strategy to enhance surveillance and create an inclusive food safety ecosystem.
Promoting Safer Food Practices
A major benefit of the Food Safety Connect app is the automatic routing of consumer complaints to the relevant jurisdictional authority. This ensures timely response of grievances and reduces delays in enforcement action, making the process efficient and effective.
By making this display compulsory, FSSAI aims to establish a strong relationship of trust between consumers and the food business. It also emphasizes the role of digital tools in ensuring compliance and accountability in the food industry.
For the food business, proper FSSAI registration and display of QR code are now crucial components of compliance. For consumers, this move promises an easier, faster, and more transparent way to keep businesses accountable.
FSSAI continues to take proactive steps toward realizing its vision of a healthier nation built on safe and hygienic food practices.
