The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has extended the compliance period for new standards related to meat sausages. This direction was issued under Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The decision supports the smoother implementation of the updated rules notified under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2025.
The amendment regulations were officially published in the Gazette of India on 10 July 2025. These rules introduced revised standards for the preparation and quality of meat sausages. The original compliance date was fixed as 1 February 2026.

Industry Challenges Lead to Extension Decision

After the notification, several Food Business Operators submitted representations to FSSAI. These representations highlighted technical, operational, and practical difficulties in meeting the new meat sausage standards within the given time. The meat processing sector raised concerns about equipment changes, formulation adjustments, and testing requirements.
FSSAI examined these concerns carefully. After due review, the authority decided to grant additional time to ensure proper and safe implementation of the standards. The compliance period for meat sausage standards now been extended by three months from 1 February 2026.
This extension aims to reduce disruption in the meat processing sector while maintaining food safety goals. The move also helps Food Business Operators align operations without compromising quality or consumer safety.
