India’s clean energy determinations received a key boost this week. At the Green Hydrogen R&D Conference in New Delhi, Union Minister of State Shri Shripad Yesso Naik urged scientists, startups, and industry leaders to make India a global hub for green hydrogen.

He called green hydrogen the “heart” of India’s journey to achieve Net Zero by 2070. Naik stressed that it will not only reduce emissions but also open new trade opportunities, generate jobs, and build energy security.

Building a Strong Innovation Ecosystem

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has already supported over 200 R&D projects in hydrogen, storage, and fuel cell technologies. Facilities, incubation support, and funding are being strengthened to help researchers turn their ideas into real-world solutions.

The two day conference witnessed lively discussions on hydrogen production, storage, safety and commercialization. Experts agreed that strong R&D, collaboration, and startup support will play a major role in making India a leader in this sector.

Empowering Youth and Startups

A strong emphasis of the event was on empowering the younger generation of researchers and entrepreneurs. Shri Naik noted that the future of the energy sector depends on brave ideas that go beyond incremental developments. “For our youth, I have a simple message: think disruptive. Design solutions that can shape the world’s energy future,” he said.

To support this vision, a special call for proposals for hydrogen-focused startups was launched during the conference. The initiative aims to lower barriers for innovators and help them scale their work quicker. Startups were also stimulated to profit from mentorship and establish collaborations across academia, industry and government.

The Minister admired young innovators who displayed their innovative work at the dedicated startup exhibition, saying their thoughts and passion reflected India’s spirit of Amrit Kaal and the vision of a developed nation by 2047.

Driving Growth and Competitiveness

Green hydrogen is not just about clean energy, it is about driving economic growth and building competitiveness. The technology is expected to transform industries like steel, cement, fertilizers, mobility, and shipping. By reducing dependence on imports, creating new trade opportunities, and powering job creation, green hydrogen has the potential to reshape India’s industrial landscape.

Industry leaders at the conference also stressed the importance of building global partnerships. As countries move towards carbon regulations, India’s leadership in green hydrogen will keep its industry future-ready and competitive in the global market.

India Ready to Lead

Acknowledging the challenges of moving from research to large-scale deployment, Shri Naik showed confidence that India can turn these challenges into opportunities. He said that India's rising R&D infrastructure, strong policy framework, international collaboration and talent pool have put the country in a good position to lead the green hydrogen revolution.

The conference saw a strong response with over 1,300 registrations, 17 technical sessions and multiple roundtables. The participation of leading scientists, startups, and policymakers confirmed India’s collective commitment to building a clean and secure energy future.

India's Green Hydrogen journey is not just about energy, it is about innovation, jobs and industrial competitiveness. With strong policy support and global partnerships, India is positioning itself as a clean energy leader ready to turn challenges into opportunities.
