The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced an important update regarding the import of yellow peas. The government extended the existing import policy of yellow peas under ITC (HS) Code 07131010 of Chapter 07 of ITC (HS) 2022, Schedule –I (Import Policy), which was due to expire on May 31, 2025, according to a notification issued on May 30, 2025. The new extension will be in effect until March 31, 2026. This update ensures that imports of yellow peas will continue without minimum import price (MIP) requirements and without any port restrictions.

Key Features of the Extended Import Policy

With the extension, yellow pea imports will continue under the “free” category, meaning there are no restrictions on price or ports. The MIP condition, which previously set a minimum price for imports, no longer applies to yellow peas during this period. In addition, no port restrictions will apply, giving importers more flexibility to use various ports for their shipments.

However, importers are still required to register their shipments under the online Import Monitoring System (IMS). This step is mandatory for all shipments of yellow peas where a Bill of Lading (Shipped on board) has been issued on or before 31 March 2026. Registration ensures that all shipments are monitored and processed efficiently, maintaining transparency in the import process.

Impact on Yellow Pea Importers

This policy extension offers many benefits to yellow pea importing businesses. The removal of the MIP requirement allows for more competitive pricing, thereby reducing overall costs for importers. Without port restrictions, businesses have more flexibility in choosing a port of entry, making the import process smoother and more cost-effective.

Importers should ensure that they are registered under the IMS system, which helps monitor the movement of yellow peas in India. While registration is a mandatory requirement, the overall import process remains simpler and more predictable, benefiting businesses involved in the yellow pea trade.

Extending the yellow pea import policy to 31 March 2026 will provide stability and flexibility to businesses. With the MIP condition and port restrictions removed, the import process becomes more streamlined. Businesses should ensure compliance with registration requirements under the import surveillance system to ensure smooth customs clearance. The move highlights the government’s focus on promoting seamless trade in agricultural commodities such as yellow peas.
