BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) issues certification to products that are manufactured as per Indian Standards. The objective of this body is to ensure the quality of consumer products. BIS issues the certificate after due testing and research on the product material as well as the process used in the manufacturing of such product. For this purpose, BIS establishes or recognizes laboratories across the country.

Generally, the producers can voluntarily seek BIS ISI certification but the central government notifies a list of items from time to time that need compulsory BIS certification. If the producers are involved in the manufacturing of these items then it becomes compulsory for them to obtain BIS ISI Certification under Standard Mark Scheme and BIS Registration under Compulsory Registration Scheme. The government keeps updating this list and adding new items to it before they are notified for implementation.
What is Compulsory Certification?
Although the manufacturers get BIS Registration and ISI Certification voluntarily, it is made compulsory to register at BIS and get ISI Certification for some important and sensitive products. There are many items on this list that are divided into two parts based on the requirement they need to fulfil. The manufacturers of these products are required to get certificates under one of the two schemes mentioned below-
- ISI Mark Scheme
- Registration Scheme
The products for which the manufacturers need to get ISI certification under the first scheme are provided below in the category-wise organized list. You can go through the list and if it mentions your product then you need to get the ISI Certification under the first scheme. The main objective of making BIS ISI Certification mandatory is to protect the public interest, health, environment, unfair trade practices and national security. You cannot manufacture, store, sell, import, or distribute these notified items without an ISI Mark.
New Additions to Product List for Compulsory Certification
Over one hundred items are set to be added to the mandatory product list starting in May. BIS shared the list in advance for better awareness purposes. These items are from the Department of Heavy Industries, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Steel, and Ministry of Textile. The list of products that will not be allowed for sale, import and distribution without BIS ISI authorization starting from May, June and July relating to various categories is given below-

Conclusion
There are lakhs of companies in India manufacturing various products for crores of people in the country and overseas. It may prove to be a disaster for the consumers if there is a lack of proper regulation of these manufacturers. BIS sets standards for a quality product but the central government makes it mandatory for manufacturers to adhere to these standards. It ensures that the consumers use products that are safe and durable. Not just consumer products but it also regulates the manufacturing of raw materials in the same manner which again ensures the quality of the products that use these ISI-certified raw materials.
