The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a new type of business (KoB) category for Ayurveda Aahara on its FoSCoS portal, making it easier for businesses to get an FSSAI license for traditional food products. In effect from September 1, 2025, this initiative validates the licensing and registration process for Ayurvedic-based food manufacturers.

What Ayurveda Aahara Category Covers
Ayurvedic Aahara refers to foods prepared using the recipes, ingredients, and methods defined in the authoritative texts of Ayurveda. However, it does not involve Ayurvedic medicines, medicinal products, cosmetics, or substances covered under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Manufacturers must secure FSSAI Central License with an annual fee of Rs. 7,500 + GST. A new Food Category (FC 102) with subcategories has been introduced to cover various types of Ayurveda Aahara products.
- Standardized Category A products need no extra documentation.
- Other categories require approval letters from FSSAI Headquarters.
- Claims related to “Disease Risk Reduction” must also be cleared by FSSAI HQ.
Simplified Compliance for Businesses
The inspection checklist for Ayurveda Aahara will be the same as for general manufacturers, needing 10 important documents. The new category is also available to traders, retailers, exporters and 100% export units, ensuring wider participation in this traditional food area.
Industry experts believe that this step will bring much-required clarity, support traditional food businesses and enhance India's Ayurvedic food exports worldwide.
With the launch of this new KoB category, FSSAI has formalized Ayurvedic Aahara under a regulated framework, which provides clarity for businesses while encouraging India's traditional food heritage.
