The Government of India has taken a significant step to monitor renewable energy imports. Starting November 1, 2025, certain solar energy components will require registration before they can enter the country.
Table of Contents
This move aims to improve oversight of India’s green energy supply chain. The notification comes from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The system, named the Renewable Energy Equipment Import Monitoring System (REEIMS), will be managed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
What Items Are Affected
REEIMS mainly targets solar energy projects to ensure better tracking and transparency in importing critical components. Importers must now register specific solar-related items before bringing them into India. This step aims to prevent misuse and strengthen oversight of the renewable energy supply chain.
- Photovoltaic cells, whether unassembled (HS code 85414200)
- Solar modules and panels with integrated cells (HS code 85414300)
- Toughened safety glass meant for solar applications (HS code 70071900)
Registration Process
Importers must submit applications in advance:
- For sea or land shipments: at least five days before arrival
- For air shipments: at least two days before arrival
Each registration is free and valid for three months. This allows importers to process multiple consignments at the same port without needing to file repeated applications.
The registration ensures that the import of renewable energy components is tracked efficiently. It also helps the government monitor supply chains and maintain transparency in the sector.
Impact on Solar Industry
REEIMS is expected to strengthen India’s green energy supply chain. It will reduce the risk of misuse or diversion of key components. Importers will need to plan shipments carefully to meet registration requirements.
Authorities believe the system will strike a balance between ease of imports and accountability. It supports the government’s efforts to expand solar and other renewable projects across the country while ensuring proper tracking of essential materials.
REEIMS represents a major step in monitoring India’s renewable energy imports. By enforcing registration and end-use declarations, the system ensures transparency, accountability, and steady growth in solar and green energy projects nationwide.
