To compete, India is planning special outreach programs in 40 key countries. These include the UK, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, Canada and Australia. These markets import more than US$590 billion worth of textiles and apparel every year.
At present, India has a mere 5-6% share of the global textile market. The government wants to change that. It aims to make India the top provider of quality, sustainable, and innovative textile products.
Focus on Quality and Sustainability
The outreach program is directed by Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and Indian Missions abroad. They will work together to encourage India’s strengths. This plan contains the use of free trade agreements (FTAs), conducting sector-specific campaigns, and participating in international trade fairs.
These efforts will help build confidence in India as a reliable partner. Indian textiles will be seen as high quality and eco-friendly. This is significant because many buyers now prefer sustainable products.
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
The US tariff hike could affect Indian exports of more than US$48 billion. Exports of textiles and apparel, worth US$10.3 billion, are among the most affected. Other sectors like gems, jewellery and machinery have also been affected.
However this challenge is also an opportunity for India. The government sees this as an opportunity to expand its export markets. India wants to extend trade relations with the UK, EFTA countries and other partners. It is also keenly pursuing new FTAs with evolving markets.
By doing so, India hopes to mitigate its dependence on the US market. The focus will be on expanding into new, high-value markets where demand for Indian textiles is rising.
Expanding Market Reach
The government's plan consist of increasing participation in global trade fairs and exhibitions. These events provide an opportunity for Indian exporters to showcase their products and meet buyers directly.
The outreach and campaigns will help India multiply its footprint. It aims to boost India's share in the global textile and apparel market. With focused efforts, India aims to become an ideal supplier worldwide.
Indian textile industry faces a tough exam but also has a great chance to grow. The coming months will demonstrate how well the country can turn this setback into success.
