The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken significant steps to improve food safety across the country. The authority is working closely with State and Union Territory (UT) governments to ensure safer food for all.

Under the SoFTeL scheme, 47 state food testing laboratories have been upgraded. In addition, 34 microbiology labs have been set up to test food quality and safety. These upgrades are aimed at detecting adulteration and ensuring compliance with food safety standards.

To reach remote areas where laboratory facilities are limited, 305 Mobile Food Testing Laboratories (MFTLs) have been deployed. These mobile labs permit on-the-spot testing and rapid results, helping authorities take timely action against unsafe food.

Enforcement and Surveillance Drives

FSSAI coordinates with State and UT food safety authorities to implement the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. While FSSAI sets the standards, implementation at the field level is regulated by state authorities.

The authority performs regular surveillance drives targeting staple foods and products prone to adulteration. These drives help collect data, monitor trends, examine risks, and enhance regulatory measures.

Currently, 246 laboratories have NABL accreditation for testing food samples. In addition, 24 referral labs owned by central institutions handle appellate sample analysis.

Support for States and UTs

FSSAI gives technical and financial assistance to strengthen local food testing systems. The support includes funding for labs, microbiology units, and mobile testing labs. Out of the 541 MFTLs planned, 305 have already been deployed across the country.

These measures ensure that both urban and rural areas benefit from better food testing and monitoring.

With upgraded labs and mobile units, FSSAI is improving food safety enforcement nationwide. The steps reduce adulteration risks and ensure access to safe, wholesome food for everyone.
