The term break bulk comes from phrase “breaking bulk” which means extraction of the portion the cargo on a ship, or the beginning of the unloading process from the ship’s hold. In modern parlances, break bulk is meant to encircle cargo that is shipped in bags, boxes, barrels, drums or items of maximum length or size.
