Can vehicles running on E20 petrol now use E100 fuel? This is one of the questions arising after the government's latest amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The answer is no. E100 is intended for vehicles specifically designed and certified to use it, not ordinary petrol vehicles.
G.S.R. 911(E), Notification dated 23rd October 2026, of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amended some regulations regarding vehicle emissions. This amendment came into effect on 26th October 2026.
Central Motor Vehicles Rules Amendment 2026 lists E100 along with E85 in certain provisions concerning flexible fuel vehicles. It amends a reference to vehicle weight from 3,000 kg to 3,500 kg and updates certain provisions on fuel entries for E20, B100, and HCNG.
For automobile manufacturers, vehicle testing organisations and businesses dealing with alternative-fuel technologies, these changes are worth understanding. Some affect how the rules cover particular vehicles, while others concern the technical information used during compliance checks.
Here are the main details of the MoRTH notification.
