The National Innovation Foundation is an independent body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. It emphases on scouting, supporting and sustaining grassroots innovations, which often go unobserved in mainstream research and development.
By providing access to innovation funding and institutional support, NIF enables grassroots innovators to patent their inventions, develop prototypes, and commercialize their inventions. The foundation also functions to build an innovation ecosystem by involving innovators with markets, investors and technical experts.
Objectives of National Innovation Foundation (NIF) Grants
The key objective of NIF Grants is to promote grassroots innovation across India, particularly from rural and backward communities, by forming a comprehensive innovation environment that nurtures, development, and commercialization of innovations.
- Promote Grassroots and Indigenous Innovations: Support and promote innovations developing directly from local communities, particularly those based on local knowledge systems.
- Provide Financial Support for Prototype Development: Offer critical funding to help innovators create and determine working prototypes, overcoming one of the major hurdles in innovation growth.
- Facilitate Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): Assist inventors in filing and obtaining patents, copyrights, and trademarks so that their inventions can be lawfully protected and commercially profit from their inventions.
- Encourage Commercialization and Market Linkage: Assist innovators in transitioning from prototype to market-ready products by enabling licensing, manufacturing, and marketing connections.
- Build an Inclusive Innovation Ecosystem: Develop a comprehensive support network to connect innovators to mentors, incubators, investors, educational institutions, and government programs.
- Empower Rural and Marginalized Innovators: Democratize innovation by authorizing rural and backward communities to benefit from their creativity and traditional knowledge for socio-economic development.
- Promote Sustainable and Socially Relevant Innovations: Prioritize innovations that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address social and environmental challenges.
