The BIS CRS Amendment is an official amendment made by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). CRS is a compulsory conformity system according to which notified electronic and IT products should be registered by BIS prior to their manufacture, importation, distribution, or sale in India.
A CRS amendment can revise the list of covered products, revise Indian Standards (IS) that are applicable, alter testing or labelling regulations, or alter procedural requirements. These amendments are published either by the official gazette or by BIS circulars and become legally binding on the date specified in the effective date.
Practically, a BIS CRS Amendment may alter the testing of a product, the standard to which it must be tested, or even whether it is subject to CRS or not. This does not imply that compliance is a one-time process for businesses. CRS registration should be modified with the amendments to stay legally safe.
CRS amendments apply equally to Indian manufacturers, foreign manufacturers, importers, and brand owners. Even products that already hold a valid BIS registration may need updates or fresh testing when an amendment comes into force.
