India’s gas sector is dignified for substantial growth in the next five to ten years, with compressed biogas (CBG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) on the rise. The country aims to upsurge the share of natural gas in the energy mix from 6.5% to 15% by 2030, addressing challenges from lagging domestic production.

Boosting Energy Sustainability with Compressed Biogas (CBG)

Compressed biogas is evolving as an important source of energy, exclusively as India works to fulfill its ambitious natural gas targets. City gas distributors have been committed to investing in CBG plants, and are setting up new facilities to convert municipal garbage into usable gas. For instance, a plant in Narela, Delhi, is expected to start operations by October 2025, producing four tonnes of gas daily and supporting India’s sustainable energy goals.

Expanding LNG Infrastructure to Clean Up Transport

Liquefied natural gas provides substantial pollution reduction potential mainly in the transportation sector. India currently has less than 1,000 LNG trucks compared to hundreds and thousands in a country like China. Increased use of LNG is expected to reduce transport-related pollution by 30 percent. There are ongoing plans to build 50 LNG refuelling stations along major highways and encourage industries like cement, steel and fertilizer to convert some part of their fleets to LNG.

India’s Renewable Energy Leadership and Policy Support

India’s commitment to sustainability was also highlighted at the PHDCCI summit, praising the country’s rapid expansion in renewable energy. With robust government policies and private sector engagement, India has already installed 116 GW of solar capacity and achieved the G20 target of 50% renewable energy capacity well ahead of schedule.

With compressed biogas and LNG gaining momentum, India is moving towards a cleaner and more sustainable gas sector. These measures support climate goals and help reduce energy wastage and pollution. As the infrastructure expands, India’s energy future looks greener and stronger.
