What is a Corona Virus?

Corona Viruses are a group of viruses that affect animals. 7, including the new virus, have made humans their new host, but most just cause cold-like symptoms.

The new virus, officially called Covid-19, is also fatal - so far, around 20 per cent of confirmed cases have been classed as drastic. So far, around 15 to 20 per cent of hospital cases have been classed as "drastic” and the present death rate varies between 0.7 per cent to 3.4 per cent depending on age and, crucially, access to good medical facilities.

How many people have died from the pandemic so far?

More than 381,000 cases have been confirmed since the outbreak started, and the number of deaths has exceeded to 16,500. Currently, the situation is under control in China, but now the virus has spread to more than 100 other countries, majority of cases are now from other parts of the globe.

According to data, around 80 per cent of cases of the disease are mild, but 20 per cent require hospitalisation, and the death rate has varied by country.

The severity of the cases also depends at which stage the virus is detected.

How did the outbreak start?

No such evidence of the source of Corona Virus is known but it is believed to be a "wet market" in Wuhan that sold both dead and live animals including fish and birds.

Such markets pose an alarming risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans because hygiene standards are difficult to maintain if live animals are being kept and butchered on site.

The animal source of the Covid 19 outbreak has not yet been identified, but the researchers think that the original host is bats. It was also a fact that Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market but it could be happen that the bats may have infected live chickens or other animals sold there.

Bats are host to a wide range of zoonotic viruses that cause diseases from animals to humans like Ebola, HIV and rabies.

What is the Strategy to combat with Covid 19?

At Present there is no vaccine that can kill the deadly Covid 19, Scientists are doing research for the Vaccine. Nobody can say how much time it will take to discover a vaccine but till then the entire world has taken an alternate option to save them from the deadly Corona Virus.

To Combat with Covid-19, the entire world is adopting the strategy of self-isolation or Quarantine. This is the only way by which we can defeat the deadly Covid-19.

As the virus transmits from one infected person to another, it is very important to stop this chain of transmission and this can happen only by not interacting with each other.

How this Covid 19 resulted in the decline of air pollution?

WHO Declares the deadly Covid 19 as a pandemic, we can see the entire world is suffering from this pandemic virus and is shutting down all industrial activity, travelling, and social gatherings; people are sitting at home and waiting for the conditions to get under control.

By taking this initiative people are not only saving themselves from this pandemic but also saving the environment, a report from European Space Agency Shows the temporary slashing air pollution levels around the world.

One of the experts said the unexpected shift represented the “largest-scale experiment ever” in terms of the reduction of industrial emissions.

The World Health Organization describes Nitrogen Dioxide as “a poisonous gas which causes significant inflammation of the air corridors” at concentrations above 200 micrograms per cubic metre.

The stringent travel restrictions and shutting down of all non-essential activities have brought about an enormous decline in the levels of nitrogen oxide—a pollutant produced due to the combustion of fuel.

Lockdown orders issued across the country, along with several other drastic measures taken by the governments to curb the spread of the deadly virus, have collectively reduced the number of vehicles on the road. Moreover, factories and industrial units have also been functioning at a bare minimum, if at all.

As lockdowns were imposed across the world to stop the transmission of coronavirus, it was observed a universal improvement in air quality, including in India.

The levels of nitrogen dioxide drop down drastically during the lockdown period, Nitrogen Dioxide is a pollutant that generally emits from motor vehicles, during the period of lockdown as people choose to stay at home this lead to a decreased level of NO2 in the air.

In India, where pollution is always a topic to talk about, pollution levels have recorded an improvement in air quality since Friday. A voluntary janta curfew was organized in India to check the spread of the disease, kept people mostly indoors on Sunday and the lockdown has been extended till the end of March in places like Delhi.

Before the Janta curfew, Kanpur’s air quality index (AQI)—193—was in the moderate category on Friday. After the Janta curfew, it improved to 77 to reach the satisfactory category.

AQI of Luck now, which was 235 on Friday, and in the poor category improved to 118 to moderate on Sunday.

Kolkata records AQI of 123 in the moderate level, which fell to 76 to satisfactory after the outbreak. Mumbai Has an AQI of 82 on Friday; it fell further to 54 bordering good air quality on Sunday.

Delhi summoned the Delhi Epidemic Disease Covid-19 Regulations, on March 12 which gives the powers to the government to take extraordinary steps to combat an outbreak. Before the lockdown, Delhi had already shut schools, restricted gatherings of over 5 people and closed movie theatres. This led to a decrease in non-essential travelling and emissions related to it. The average AQI between March 13 and 22 in Delhi was found 161.4 as compared to 190.5 last year.

The lockdown is catalysing the changes, which can be sustained beyond the corona crisis. We are thinking to set up a system to work with less travel. By this we can realise the full potential of digitisation. We had not explored this alternative before. It’s a big lesson. Another reason of the reduction in emissions is the Shutting down of factories and industries and this indicates that we should switch to cleaner or greener technologies.

The time of isolation from each other or from the physical world could be seen as a moment to understand nature’s processes and identify what we are giving to our Mother Earth. This is a good time to do things for the environment that we can’t do because of our busy schedules.

What lesson did the whole World learn from this Pandemic?

The strongest and most developed countries of the world are unable to control the spread of a droplet viral infection (Covid 19) by using all of their efforts. At the end, they have to adopt the social awareness and behavioural change method.

Then how can we imagine that by paying environmental cess the economy can save our planet from the coming hazards it is quite doubtful, at the end behavioural change is the only way to save our planet and save humanity.

If the exploitation of nature will continue in this manner, then be ready to face the drastic changes in the near future. This pandemic is just an example if we will not stop there are many more to come.

Mother Earth is just returning the favour that we offer them, this is the time when everyone should come together and think about this.

This pandemic can also be seen in this way that nature is taking time to heal itself because we are not mature enough to see the signs that the earth is showing with climate change.

The only way to combat with all these problems is to do sustainable development where nature and development run parallel to each other.
